Mobile dimensioning is the process of capturing an item’s length, width, and height, often along with weight, using a handheld device at the point of work. Instead of routing items to a fixed cubing station, workers can scan boxes, pallets, irregular freight, or oversized goods directly on the warehouse floor.

The resulting data is used for things like freight billing (DIM weight), slotting and space planning, packing decisions, and cleaning up item master data.

Most mobile dimensioning tools are marketed as a narrow fix: scan faster than with tape, avoid fixed stations, and reduce chargebacks from incorrect dimensions.

That’s useful, but incomplete.

In reality, when dimensioning happens, teams also need to capture barcodes, labels, weight, packaging types, exceptions, and photo proof. If those steps are delayed or split across roles, the time saved on “fast dimensioning” is often lost to rework or mismatched records.

Both Optioryx Flux and MobileDemand xDIM aim to bring dimensioning directly to the point of task.

xDIM focuses on replicating the accuracy of static cubers in a rugged mobile device. Flux takes a broader view, embedding dimensioning into a fully configurable mobile workflow that can include barcode scans, label OCR, weight extraction, image capture, structured QA, and more.

This comparison breaks down how each solution approaches mobile dimensioning, and why Flux may be the smarter, more scalable fit for logistics teams seeking speed and structured data capture in one step.

Hardware and Setup

  • Flux runs on smartphones and tablets (iOS or Android) with LiDAR or Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors. It’s a downloadable app, making setup as simple as installing on your device.
  • MobileDemand xDIM relies on a rugged, Windows-based tablet with an Intel RealSense camera. It’s heavier, more expensive, and must beconfigured before use.

Flexibility and Functionality

  • Flux enables custom data capture workflows. In Flux desktop application, users can choose from multiple data gathering components, where dimensioning, barcode scanning, weight capture is only a part of the modules, with many others to choose from - such as simple checklists and advanced AI vision scanning like item counting, damage detection, text extraction, document digitization.Any team can tailor Flux to match their operations without coding.
  • xDIM captures dimensions, barcodes, weights (via a separate Bluetooth scale), and images. Its software supports the capture of dimensions, weight, photos, barcodes.

Accuracy and Ease of Use

  • Flux delivers high precision measurements. It excels with both standard and irregular shapes. Users report being fully operational within minutes.
  • xDIM is NTEP-certified for box measurements, offering high accuracy ideal for regulated environments.

Integration and Scalability

  • Flux integrates with WMS, TMS, or ERP systems via API or file export. It scales effortlessly across teams and sites. No integration is needed to get started.
  • xDIM supports integration.

Pricing

  • Flux is free to use and it offers affordable usage-based pricing. There's no capital investment needed, and businesses can start small and expand as needed.
  • xDIM requires upfront purchase of rugged tablets and licensing. No transparency on pricing - hidden behind a form.

Flux: Mobile Data Gathering Platform

Flux is a platform that turns any mobile device into powerful data gathering tools.

Flux consists of a mobile app that runs on iOS and Android device and a web portal from which users can manage the data gathering points or "flows". The flows are managed through the desktop and can support various use-cases and can be assigned to different users across the field.

For mobile dimensioning Flux uses the technology that is already available in the compatible devices such as iPad Pro (2020+), iPhone 13 Pro+, or Zebra TC53/58 with ToF sensors.

These devices are accessible worldwide making the tool accessible. And with advanced developed algorithms Flux supports the dimensioning of both small and large items: from SKUs, irregular items, parcels, pallets and even larger items such as ULD's (unit load devices), specialized containers used to load freight onto aircrafts.

Flux goes beyond just measuring dimensions. It provides a flow builder that lets users create custom workflows for data capture, without needing any coding.

In practice, this means warehouse staff can scan a barcode, capture item dimensions, take photos for proof of condition, perform OCR (optical character recognition) on labels (e.g. to record weight or ID numbers), and input custom notes all in one guided sequence.

These flows can be tailored for different processes – inbound receiving, outbound shipping, quality inspections, returns, etc. – without any coding. Flux replaces paper forms and static cubing stations with a flexible mobile app, ensuring clean, structured data is collected every time.

MobileDemand xDIM

MobileDemand xDIM is a hardware-integrated solution that pairs a rugged tablet with an advanced 3D depth camera to perform mobile dimensioning. xDIM is sold as a bundled system – typically a MobileDemand xTablet T1175 (a durable Windows tablet) equipped with an Intel® RealSense™ depth camera for scanning. This all-in-one device runs the xDIM software, providing a “modern, mobile, multi-mode dimensioning” system.

xDIM is a handheld electronic “dimensioner” that you can carry to any location in the warehouse. It was designed to rival the accuracy of stationary dimensioning machines (like pallet cubers or parcel sizers) while adding the freedom of mobility.

Limitations: measure boxes as small as 3 inches up to 4 feet in one scan, and larger items up to 8 feet
