"We saw that the static dimensioner was gathering dust in the warehouse.”

Limburg, Belgium – BME, a leading provider of integrated logistics solutions in the e-commerce sector, has successfully implemented Flux, the mobile dimensioning app of the Belgian startup Optioryx.

From Static Dimensioning to Mobile

At BME, we specialize in facilitating the shipment of goods all around the world. An important success factor for this is accurate master data - we measure and record item dimensions and weights upon inbound receipt to drive efficiencies in slotting, picking, packing & shipment cost calculations.

Previously, we relied on static dimensioners; however, the team encountered several challenges that led to their disuse.

"We saw that the static dimensioner was gathering dust in the warehouse,”

- Daniel Ciccodemarco, Managing Director at BME.

This was due to 2 main reasons:

  1. Fixed Location: BME operates a large, multi-level warehouse. The static dimensioner was fixed in one location, requiring warehouse operators to walk to it.
  2. Accuracy: BME’s inventory includes a diverse range of items, from standard boxes to uniquely shaped food and beverage products, often wrapped in plastic. The static dimensioner struggled with accuracy, sometimes including parts of the packaging that should not have been measured.

The Mobile Dimensioning Solution

To overcome these challenges, BME sought a solution that allows operators to dimension items with less resistance, removing the need to move items to specific dimensioning locations.

This is where Flux came in, providing the perfect fit for our needs. With Flux, BME can scan SKUs and master cartons upon arrival, ensuring accurate master data to enhance slotting, picking, and packing efficiency.

Discoveries & Benefits of Flux

Using the mobile dimensioning solution confirmed that Optioryx's solution is well-suited for our needs.

  • Flow Builder: Flux's flow builder accommodates a variety of operational flows, allowing our users to configure the sequence of modules & gather the data they need for their operations directly within the app
  • API Connectivity: Flux's API connectivity ensures that all registrations are automatically sent to BME’s WMS.
  • Weight Registration: Flux can read the weight from our chosen scales using OCR techniques, allowing us to simply scan the weight and send it directly to our system.
  • Ease of Setup: We began scanning items in the warehouse within just five minutes.
  • Cost-effective: multiple times cheaper than static dimensioning systems

Results

By improving our previous way of working, we eased the process of enriching our master data from day one. Flux’s ease of use and customizable workflow allowed us to quickly adapt our processes, and we were immediately up and running.

Now with real-time data capture and integration into our WMS, we have better visibility and control over our inventory, leading to better decision-making and operational cost savings.

FAQ

Questions?

How does the mobile dimensioning app work?

Flux uses LiDAR laser technology available on compatible iOS and Android devices. This allows you to scan items and capture dimensions with high accuracy on the go.

How much does the mobile app cost vs. a static dimensioner?

The Optioryx mobile dimensioning solutuins is free to use. Static dimensioners can cost anywhere from €15,000 to €50,000

How accurate is mobile dimensioning compared to static dimensioners?

Mobile dimensioning systems using LiDAR typically achieve accuracy within 1 to 2 centimeters. Static dimensioners with infrared or laser sensors measure to within 1 to 5 millimeters. For most warehouse applications like freight classification and carton selection, the centimeter-level accuracy of mobile systems is more than sufficient. Certified legal-for-trade billing is where static systems hold an advantage.

How long does it take to deploy mobile dimensioning in a warehouse?

Mobile dimensioning typically deploys in 2-3 days. Day one covers app configuration and workflow setup. Devices are loaded immediately — there is no hardware procurement, site preparation, or physical installation. Day two involves a brief team training session, and operations go live the same day. Compare this to static hardware dimensioners, which require 4-8 weeks: 2-3 weeks for procurement, 1 week for site prep, and 1-2 weeks for installation, calibration, and formal training. For warehouses facing urgent problems like inaccurate freight charges or failed load plans, the speed difference alone is often the deciding factor.
